These fly fishing videos were filmed by Mike using his ‘Grand Prix’ rods, to help those potential and existing anglers he is unable to meet, and they make not-to-be-missed viewing. Each fly fishing video provides a simple and detailed record of how to make technically correct overhead casts to be proud of, that catch lots of fish from stillwaters or rivers, and also provide a sound foundation for any local casting variations. Single handed casts include the addition of double haul for advanced performance in easy steps and, it will be found, following-on with double handed casting is not difficult.
Plastic coated fly lines fill long, complicated lists but, to start with, just choose weight forward floating lines with very slick finishes, having head lengths between 37 and 47ft long, then add a small selection of 5ft sinking polyleaders as needed. These will present your flies superbly well without much effort at good distances, with any casting errors clearly exhibited when watching, as you should do, the airborne line. And it is here that fine timing and good exercise merge to provide a great feeling of wellbeing through fly fishing.
So how does a flexible fly line cast? Put a length on a smooth table and push the end – the line crumples. Pull, and the line becomes straight and forms a weight for the rod tip to act on, then cast. The fly fishing videos show airborne, hairpin shaped rolling line loops having this pulling action, being cast surprisingly long distances, with emphasis on final speed not heavy effort. The relatively straight and parallel hairpins’ legs suggest straight rod hand movements, not the chopping movements human arms instinctively make, so PLEASE FOLLOW THE TRAINING METHODS DESCRIBED and excellent fly casting will result. Cast the rod like throwing a large dart at double top works really well, bowling it like a cricket ball doesn’t!
