Fly Fishing Rods
Having designed and built a vast range of single handed rods (SH) and double handed rods(DH), I teach anglers to use them, and my distance outfits gave me many wins and records. So which fly fishing rod offers the best value?
What Length and Size of Fly Fishing Rod Should I Start With?

After teaching countless beginners, adults do best with a 9 ½’ #7 SH or a 14’ #10 DH outfit. Whereas an early teenager is a young enough beginner, using a 9’ #6 SH or a 13’ #9 DH outfit. This tackle provides sufficient beginners line weight, but will also suit much world fly fishing.
Carbon fibre (graphite) fly rods offer cutting edge technology, power with lightness, and some have added graphene to minimise accidental damage.
4 piece SH and 6 piece DH rods provide great design opportunities, travel easily and securely, and fly fish superbly.
What Is the Best Length for Fly Fishing Rods?

Widespread fishing reveals that a fly rod length should be chosen based on the line control needed by fly rods, although compromises extend uses.
The most popular length for fly rods is 9 ½’ SH. It casts distance on stillwaters reasonably accurately, picks up well and controls drag across river currents – a fly fishing all-rounder.
Second, 9’ SH rods cast distance on stillwaters more accurately, but pick up less. They are much used on larger, breezy chalk streams for fly presentation.
8’ SH rods increase accuracy, decrease pick up and cast under modest foliage, making them definitive river trout fly rods
7’ SH rods accurately present a fly on densely overhung trout streams, to close fish.
Increasing rods to 10’ or 11’ SH is required for short, drifting boat casts or European nymph fishing.
For rivers, 13’ and 14’ DH rods achieve good casting distance and fly drag control in currents, but fishing solo creates netting problems.
Powerful 9’ SH rods are popular for windy saltwater fishing and fishing large pike lures.
A distance fly rod longer than 9 ½’ SH distance rods may disappoint, my 70 yard record fishing rod was shortened to 9’ 3”.
Finally, ‘middle to tip action rods’ means a stiff lower half, with most of the bend in the top half.
What Weight of Fly Fishing Rod Should I Use?

‘Weight’ refers to the first AFTM 30’ of lines, each weighed and numbered bit by bit, ranging from: #4 – light; to #10 – heavy. Each weight may be supplied floating (F – thickest), slow sinking (I), to fast sinking (S – thinnest), but they should all weigh the same and have a slick surface for casting.
Weight forward (WF) lines are most popular, with head lengths from 30’ (beginners) to 58’ (experts), seamlessly attached to running line. These cast a fly well with helpful breezes and fit most reels, including backing. Rare double taper (DT) lines present a fly in a head-wind or mist, but accommodating backing is a problem.
The uses for SH weights are: #4 – delicacy, accuracy, short range, small streams; #5 – delicacy, accuracy, medium range, rivers, small stillwaters; #6 – accuracy, longer range, breezy conditions, rivers, medium stillwaters, junior beginners; #7 – most popular, larger stillwaters, sea trout and low water salmon rivers, the sea, adult beginners; #8 and #9 – deep stillwaters, the sea, pike lures.
Uses for DH line weights: #9 – small rivers, salmon, junior beginners; #10 largest rivers, salmon, adult beginners.
Selecting Fly Fishing Rods – The joy quality fly rods bring to lovely fly fishing is obvious. However, another brand such as Shakespeare can produce sport, at an affordable price. So, which kits to choose from pages of jargon, describing a huge range of price and stock?
