INTRODUCTION TO ‘GRAND PRIX’ FLY FISHING LINES
Having taught countless anglers to cast a fly, their lines have fallen into two categories. Expensive ones with, two colours brilliant at water-level but invisible when casting, tapered heads with thicker air resistant bellies and confusing claims about surface finish. And more recently, low-priced ones with drawbacks such as variable WF head weights, lack of slickness, heavy running line and no end loops.
So, I wondered if the advantages of these two systems could be combined? Well, after much development work and testing they can. The super new, growing range, of ‘GRAND PRIX’ fly fishing and casting lines is now available to the discerning angler. It is not often that I can say a product makes a difference to the enjoyment of our sport, but these lines really do!
GENERAL ‘GRAND PRIX’ LINE FEATURES
- Price & Delivery - Developed and offered at sensible prices by a well-established UK fly fishing business with imaginative ideas. Available by Tracked letter post, avoiding signature delays. Line protection by interesting, specially designed recyclable packaging through your mailbox flap.
- Line Lengths - 95’ which fit most reels. Beautifully welded loops at each end which are very smooth and convenient in use. High intensity white colouring permits easy line loop visibility during casting in most environments.
- Line Construction - Slim, parallel belly diameters have lowest air drag. 7’ front taper for good turnover and fly presentation. 12’ back taper allowing optimum double hauling for initial line speed and various different casts. No complicated diagrams and descriptions required. All similar to my successful competition distance casting lines.
- Running Line - Small diameter, light running line for the very longest, smooth shoots. During casting you easily feel the difference between head and running line, making two colours unnecessary by simple means.
- Line Slick - Maximum casting performance is achieved with the special line slick provided – for occasional use.
- Squeezy Bottle with child-proof push/twist screw cap.
- Squeeze a few drops on a paper tissue – wipe sparingly on line to be shot.
- Leave for 10 mins – carefully wipe off any surplus for a micro-slick surface which does not dry.
#5F x 45’ Head weight 13.1gm. Floating. White. 95’. Ideal for interesting and challenging rivers/ streams, even very breezy ones. Longer Head length than usual for double haul casting to more distant fish. Accurate presentation for dry flies and weighted nymphs. Equally at home for the gentle presentation of small and medium flies on stillwaters, yet the slick finish will permit long shoots to reach more fish. A very worthwhile all-round line for surprisingly good results.

#5F x 60’ Head weight 18.3gm. Floating. White. 95’. An exceptionally manageable competition casting line with ‘second to none’ distance shooting capabilities. However, there are other very useful fishing reasons for fishing with this line; it’s head length is long enough to cast like a double taper line into a breeze and other tough casting conditions; traditional downstream wet fly fishing is easy; line does not overfill reel.

#7F x 47’ Head weight 16.5gm. Floating. White. 95’. This is the ideal line for general stillwater fishing and large rivers. Its head length is just right for double haul casting to distant fish, yet presents the fly well. I use this line for demonstrations with exceptional results.
Post Tracked 48 £2.70 each
#7F x 60’ Head weight 25.8gm. Floating. White. 95’. A very powerful but controllable competition casting line, again with ‘second to none’ shooting capabilities. Again, this line will cast like a double taper into strong wind and other very tough casting conditions, also will cast and fish downstream wet fly style, but will not overfill the reel.
