Fly Fishing Lessons & Tuition in Essex
Having taught countless people to cast a fly by holding their hands and casting with them, Mike’s fly fishing lessons have helped many clients to gain ‘the feel’ of a good cast and rapidly enjoyed very successful results.
The precise movements required to achieve these outcomes have been carefully recorded in his video, ‘Single Handed Distance Fly Casting’ which leaves no doubt about the way to create an effective hairpin-shaped line loop. In very basic terms what happens is: The rod hand acceleration creates the straight hairpin legs; the abrupt flick and stop of the hand causes the rod tip to recoil quickly to propel the line; the amount the rod tip drops during casting creates the width of the hairpin loop.
All this could remind us of Ibsen’s old saying: ‘a picture is worth a thousand words’ but, in this case, ’the feel’ of a cast is worth far more than that! To reinforce this concept in practical terms, please remember generations of sea trout anglers, fly fishing completely in the dark at night, have only been able to function by ‘feel‘.
Then along came Covid-19, infection prevention and ‘social distancing’, so out went fly fishing lessons ‘by feel’. This caused much longer learning curves for the clients of his fly fishing lessons, with the essential nuances of acceleration, stopping and waiting much more difficult to acquire by verbal description.
So, confronted by this frustration Mike invented, designed and made what is thought to be a unique casting machine, pictured above. It exactly imitates his previous fly fishing teaching methods, including double haul, while maintaining ‘social distancing’, so the ‘feel’ of good fly casting is restored.
Developing a fly casting machine caused worries because it suggested a mechanism devoid of human skill, but these have proved to be unfounded and there have actually been unexpected benefits which include: the skill of the coach has been retained by the control mechanism; the student’s rod is fully guided in a straight line throughout its acceleration, recoil and pauses for line straightening; because the student’s rod is being fully guided by ‘feel’ their mind has capacity to think about other important aspects, such as watching the airborne line to judge its release when shooting more; a student is not tempted to grip their rod handle too tightly or try to use strength, which improves accuracy of movement and is less tiring; when learning double haul the ‘feel’ of these unusual, but very important movements, is fully transmitted by a separate coach-controlled mechanism.
Please let Mike know if you would like to have a Casting Machine, perhaps in kit form for the best possible price?
VARIOUS FLY FISHING LESSONS AND TUITION OPPORTUNITIES
Mike very much enjoys offering fly fishing lessons in Brentwood, Essex, one to one in a very nice environment thanks to his sporting friends at Hutton Cricket Club so you can be sure of a pleasant experience at a modest cost.
NEW STARTERS are very welcome for fly fishing lessons and learn quickly using the fly casting machine, with suitable rod, reel and line supplied if needed. However, an unexpected advantage is that, due to good advice, they do not spend unwisely on equipment afterwards.
EXPERIENCED FLY FISHERS should have a fly fishing lesson every year or three to ensure their technique is always in an upward direction. Please remember muscles try to revert to ‘chopping’ with slow strength if not quickly corrected and, left unchecked over time, bad habits are difficult to shift.
DOUBLE HAUL FLY CASTING is essential for top performance and Mike is happy to teach this clever technique as a separate subject. With practise afterwards, dramatic improvements in distance and against wind are regularly achieved.
