Competition Fly Rods

Fly casting distance competitions and training for them are really good mental and overall physical exercise, which you don’t have to give up with age because the UK competitions are age related. As such they are much more important than is generally imagined, in terms of wellbeing.

Due to the variability of our weather it is unlikely for anyone to win every competition, and I fondly remember a senior competitor’s regularly expressed hope for ‘a lucky gust’.

This quickly changed my attitude from ‘must win’ to: design and use the most suitable tackle; train to achieve the best casting technique; enjoy the idea of casting against myself for the best achievable result. It’s worked for a long time, so I recommend this relaxing thinking to anyone taking part, particularly when better fishing follows!

The most popular distance casting competition categories are:

  • 9’ rod, AFTM #5F line usually cast with head lengths between 58’ and 68’ long.
  • 9.5’ rod, AFTM #7 line usually cast with head lengths between 58’ and 72’ long.

The choice of the WF head length is often a matter of what suits the individual caster’s style and, more frequently, the strength of the wind. The preference often being a long head for calmer conditions, and a shorter one when it’s windy.

Having investigated the subject and was holder of the #7 record for about 10 years, Mike can now offer the two best distance casting rods he has ever developed, which have:

  • The right blank tapers and power to ‘carry’ impressive head lengths and generate exciting final delivery tip speeds.
  • Highly polished ceramic lined rod rings throughout keep the line off the rod when casting, provide super smooth hauls and exceptionally slick shoots.
  • Full Wells handles of the correct diameter, to fit the caster’s hand.
  • No rod tube, due to multiple rods usually being transported in a carrying case.
